Other information that you will need to know…
Parents are encouraged to arrange a visit to a family physician for hearing and vision screening prior to the child’s entry to school.
The immunization school pupils act from 1982 states that the Region of Waterloo Public Health must have a record of your child’s immunization in order to attend a school in Ontario. School immunization reporting will now occur online at the regionofwaterloo.ca. If you choose not to list immunization for your child, you must contact the Region of Waterloo Public Health at 519-575-4400 x 50003 for exemption information.
Children with special needs (Speech & Language, Vision, Hearing, Intellectual) should register in the school in their home area.
If your student is already enrolled at John Sweeney from the previous year, this does not apply to you.

This email contains an update regarding the coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The over-arching key message is the fact that Ontario is very prepared and has effective protocols, which are currently operating very well, and the guiding principles that we do well to ground our response in the facts and what we know to be good practice.
To that end – we are encouraged to redouble our efforts in our schools to ensure:
- good hygiene – washing hands thoroughly and with soap or sanitizer;
- covering one’s mouth and nose when one sneezes or coughs;
- staff and students stay home when ill.
- It is also wise to get a yearly flu vaccine, available from clinics or pharmacies.
Attached is a letter which has been provided jointly by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.
Also for your reference, we attach a link to the Ministry of Health’s dedicated website where up-to-date information will be shared about the virus and its spread. It is anticipated that there will be more cases and more spread before the outbreak is fully contained. That said – whatever we can do to foster calm, tolerant and informed responses to the crisis, will be in everyone’s best interest.
You’re invited on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, Fr. Joseph de Viveiros C.R. to celebrate Mass for staff, students and parents from the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. This celebration will bring a close to our Board’s Pastoral theme from this past year, Called to Belong. While our gathering at St. Anthony Daniel Parish will close one chapter, it will also give life to this coming year’s Pastoral theme, Gathered to Become.
Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Parish in Kitchener. A reception in the Parish Life Centre will immediately follow Mass. We anticipate that each school community be represented at this upcoming celebration. We are inviting all principals, staff members, and students along with their parents to join us for this celebration of faith.
Please RSVP email@example.com by Thursday, February 6th if you are able to attend.

On Friday, February 14th, John Sweeney Catholic School will be hosting our annual, full-day fundraising event for all of our students, Kindergarten to grade eight. Carlos from DJ Sound Struck will be back to host the event and he is sure to get the dance floor rocking! The proceeds from this year’s drive will go to completing phase two of our Greening Project (an effort to provide shade to our school’s yard and play areas).
Every student will receive a glow bracelet on the day of the event and for every $5 a student raises, they will receive a ballot for a chance to win a raffle prize! Some of these amazing prizes include Rangers tickets, a wireless speaker, various gift cards, board games and even the chance to be Principal for the day (just to name a few)! The top fundraising class in each division will also win a class PIZZA or ICE CREAM party!
Today marks the first day of the fundraising campaign and a pledge form will be sent home with your child(ren) to help you track funds raised. All funds collected can be submitted electronically through School Cash Online until Tuesday, February 11th. We encourage students to ask family (no door-to-door requests please) to support our school’s greening initiative.
On behalf of School Council, Staff and Students – we thank you for your support! See you on the dance floor February 14th Cardinals!

Important Update re: WCDSB Extended Day Programs on January 21
Important Update: On January 21, 2020 all WCDSB extended day programs will be OPEN for the day as usual (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for students currently registered in the program.
A previous communication indicated extended day programs would not operate that day.
An updated version of that earlier message is provided below.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
WCDSB Schools Closed on Tuesday, January 21, 2020
The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) has announced that all of its members will be engaging in a one-day strike on Tuesday, January 21. This decision affects all Catholic district school boards in Ontario.
As a result of this strike, all Waterloo Catholic District School Board elementary and secondary schools will be closed on January 21.
Secondary school credit courses offered at the WCDSB’s St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres campuses will be cancelled on January 21, but all other St. Louis programs will be open and running on their normal schedules.
All WCDSB extended day programs will be open for the day as usual (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for students currently registered in the program.
Community use of schools activities will continue as scheduled.
OECTA’s previously announced administrative job actions will remain in effect before and after January 21.
As before, we remain hopeful the two sides will return to the bargaining table quickly and will come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.
