2019/2020 School Year

Dear Senior Kindergarten (SK) families:

In 10 days, Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services and the local Lions Club will be offering a vision screening program for SK students at your school.
What is vision screening? Vision screening is a series of three short tests to find out if a child may have an issue with their vision. Possible issues may include:

  • trouble seeing an object up close or far away
  • trouble getting both eyes to look the same way
  • one eye being stronger than the other

To complete the screening tests, your child will be asked to look at or through equipment and no eye drops are used. All SK children will be screened by trained volunteers using tests and measures set out by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Please note your child should still see an Optometrist for a full eye exam every year. These exams are free for all children 0-19 years old who have a valid OHIP Health Card.

Why is vision screening important?

The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) states that about 80 per cent of learning comes from what you see. Also, one in every six children has some sort of vision problem. Vision issues can affect a child’s ability to balance, be independent, play, and learn to their full potential. Links between the eyes and the brain are mostly formed by the age of six, so it is important to treat vision issues as early as possible.

Will I get the results?

On the day of screening, a letter will be sent home with your child. The letter will indicate whether or not a concern was identified and what to do next. You may also receive a reminder notice 20 days following the screening.

I do not want my child’s vision screened

Remembrance Day Celebration – Honour Roll

Image result for remembrance day

November is a time to remember and honor those who have died in past wars and conflicts while serving our country, as well as those who served or continue to serve today. We have created a list of names, an Honor Roll of Veterans, people especially important to our own John Sweeney School Community.

We know that we have many new families and staff in our community this year, and we would like to invite you to submit names of those you would like us to add to our John Sweeney School Honour Roll. Please email the names to Mrs. Van Dam, and they will be added to our Honour Roll this year.  Please email by Friday, November 8 and put Honour Roll in the subject line. Print their name, and if you know it, their rank and where they served.

This Honor Roll will also be presented in our opening procession at our Remembrance Day Celebration, and later transferred to our school prayer centre. It will also become a focal point in our prayer centre at our Remembrance Day Celebration, which will take place at 10:00 a.m. on November 11th in our gym.

Thanks from the John Sweeney Remembrance Day Committee 2019
